Introducing Octopus Research Institute

This is a research update, not a peer-reviewed publication.

This is a research update, not a peer-reviewed publication. It describes our intentions and current direction in plain terms.

Why the Institute exists

Technical capability alone does not make an AI system trustworthy. A system can be capable and still be unaccountable, opaque, inaccessible, or dependent on a single external provider. Octopus Research Institute exists to study the technical foundations that accountable, accessible, governable and sovereign AI actually require — and to report what we find honestly, including negative results and limitations.

What we study

Our active and exploratory work spans governed AI systems, evidence and audit, graph reasoning, sovereign and local AI, privacy-preserving pipelines, and an early, community-informed exploration of Auslan and multimodal accessibility. Each area on this site carries an explicit status, so a research direction is never mistaken for a finished product.

How we relate to the rest of the ecosystem

Octopus Core builds the infrastructure. Octopus Research Institute advances the knowledge. Octopus Foundation ensures that progress serves people. These are distinct organisations with distinct responsibilities, and we keep research findings separate from product claims.

What to expect

We will publish technical reports, research notes and, where the work supports it, preprints — always labelled by peer-review status. We will state limitations prominently, disclose funding and conflicts, and document datasets and models honestly, including when something is only a concept.
